Like second-hand car salesmen, sellers of second hand phones and laptops can have a reputation for being dodgy. This is often well deserved. Many a chancer has snuck in suitcases of discarded devices from other parts of the world, and hawked them as quality second hand cell phones in the hope of making a quick buck.
In reality, the quality sucks and the hard-earned money you pay for your device is wasted.
Given this reality, it is worth asking – is Unboxxed legit?
We can't decide for you. Here are 7 things to think about when making up your mind:
ONE: We use well regarded, trusted payment providers
When you are an online store like we are, you need to use a payment provider to process payments. The payment provider is responsible for making sure that the transaction is secure, that it is not fraudulent, and for transferring funds from the customer to Unboxxed.
We use 4 payment providers, all of them are well regarded South African businesses that process payments for a large number of eCommerce stores and brands in SA.
- PayFast – process all payments to us made by credit card. They are one of South Africa's most established payment providers. An important service they provide is dual authentication. This means that when you purchase a device from us using your debit or credit card, you will get a notification from your bank asking you to approve the transaction. The transaction will only be successful if you approve it via your bank. - Pay Just Now – process all transactions for customers who choose to pay over 3 months. Pay Just Now confirm the customer is likely to be able to make the payments, and they deduct payments from the customer over a 3-month period. Click to visit PayJustNow website.
- Ozow – process all direct EFT payments that are made to us by customers. Ozow has linkages with all major banks in South Africa and have built a smooth process to ensure that you can transfer funds securely and conveniently to us when you purchase a device. Click to visit Ozow website.
TWO: We work really hard to make our customers happy

FOUR: We are a registered and legally compliant company

FIVE: Our 1-year warranty
When you are parting with your hard earned money to buy a refurbished laptop or a second hand phone, you want to know that it will last. Just like a new device, all our devices come with a 1-year warranty. If it develops a fault in this time, get in touch with us and we’ll arrange to collect it, and repair it. If it can’t be repaired, we’ll switch it out for another device or refund you in full if we don’t have a similar device available to offer you.
SIX: Our 14-days free return
This is perhaps our most important offer to our customers. We want our customers to be happy, and we really don’t want them to regret their purchase decision. We recognise that buying a pre owned phone, tablet, or laptop online can be scary. What if you purchase a device, and when it arrives you see that it is badly dented and scratched?
For this reason we offer free 14-day returns on all our devices. If, when you receive your refurbished device, you feel that it doesn’t meet your requirements, we’ll take it back. Drop us a note, we’ll arrange for a courier to come and collect it, and once we’ve inspected it back at our facility, we’ll refund you in full.
It is costly for us to arrange couriers and inspection on returns. This means that we work really hard to make sure that you will be happy with your pre used phone. As a rule we try and exceed our customers expectations. Check out our reviews – we think we’re doing OK.
SEVEN: Care for the environment
This one is super important for us. The reason we founded Unboxxed is because we are concerned about the damage that we, as mankind, are doing to the environment.
Every year we generate over 53 million tons of electronic waste globally. Each person who buys a pre owned or refurbished device is helping to reduce this. If we were dodgy, we wouldn't sell many devices and we wouldn't make a difference.
